Why we do this

Data recovery is an unusual kind of software. Nobody wants it. Nobody installs it because they're curious, or because a colleague recommended a better way to work. They install it on the worst day of their working life — after the drive failed, after the format, after the backup turned out not to be a backup.

That shapes everything about how we build. It means the software has to work without internet access, because the machine may be unbootable. It has to be readable by someone who is panicking. It has to tell you honestly when the data is gone, rather than sell you a licence first and disappoint you later. And it has to be safe to run — read-only, always, with no chance of a slip making things worse.

Where we came from

Our engineering team has been writing recovery engines for Windows for over twenty years, across FAT, exFAT and NTFS, and across several generations of storage hardware. That's a long time to spend on an unfashionable problem, and it's given us a particular bias: we trust the bytes on the disk more than we trust anything the disk says about itself.

Carve Data Recovery is the current result of that work — rebuilt from the ground up for modern hardware, including 4Kn drives, large volumes, GPT, and the USB enclosures people actually use.

How we work

• Read-only, always. The engine never writes to a source device. Recovery output goes to a drive you choose.
• Honest limits. We tell you what can't be recovered instead of letting you find out after paying.
• Free to try. Scanning and previewing are unlimited and unlicensed. You only pay to write files back out.
• Offline licensing. Activation works without a network, because our customers frequently don't have one.
• Privacy by default. Your files never leave your machine. We don't scan them, upload them, or look at them.
